Tarsal Coalition

This is a condition that usually doesn’t present until adolescence and early adulthood.

Patients present with stiff, tired feet and may get cramps in the legs.

It usually has been present since birth, but as the bones get stronger with age, that is when it can start to cause problems.  The hindfoot bones are joined together at birth and as you grow the joints in the hindfoot develop.

Occasionally the bones stay stuck together, either by bone or a fibrous tissue.  This is why the hindfoot becomes stiff and sometimes painful.

Anti-inflammatories and sometimes a steroid injection can help.

Good orthotic support is essential.

Occasionally surgery is required
